Generally, the priority list for a golf course is Greens -> Tees -> Fairways -> Bunkers -> Roughs. When in doubt, this is the list that can be defaulted to. For example, if you only have 3 members of your team show up to work, and you need to get the golf course set up, would you have 1 person mow roughs, 1 person mow fairways, and 1 person work in the bunkers? Of course not – you would have 1 to 2 people mow greens, and 1 person set up the course. If more people show up, you would fill in the jobs, based on priority, going down the defaulted list. This list is a representation of the basics required to set up a golf course.

Mowing priority is: Greens 7x a week, Tees 4x a week, Fairways 3-4x a week, and Roughs 1x a week. Mowing is the very close second #2 priority whilst managing a golf course. The grass has to be mowed. This is critical to its health and development. If you are struggling to hit these mowing frequencies, you need to either A: hire more people, or B: schedule better with this being a major priority. There is no excuse to not being able to mow at this frequency, this is the job.

After mowing is completed, moisture management is next. It is critical to be able to monitor the moisture to keep the grass healthy. Turfgrass kept too wet is susceptible to disease and insect pressure. Turfgrass kept too dry will thin out and die. There requires a balance of moisture. This work needs to be completed every single day. Without it, you do not have a golf course.

When this damage occurs, you will not be able to grow yourself back out of it without fertilizers. Chemical selection is extremely important, the type of chemical matters, the type of fertilizer matters. It takes experience to understand which to utilize on your golf course – but it is most important to have the ability to apply all these chemicals whenever you have to.

Once you have the ability to be able to manage these 4 thing without any problems, you should have a well maintained golf course already, and then detail work is where you can spend the remainder of your time. Details are important, but they are only important if EVERYTHING else is already completed. Raking leaves in the rough may seem more important than spraying fungicides on the greens, but it is not. Having healthy greens always takes priority. You always want to be able to do what is the most necessary thing, you need to be able to schedule your staff to focus on your priorities rather than busy work.
